Letter open of François Léotard to Mahmoud Ahmadinedjad

    Mr. President,

Frankly, by beginning this letter, I did not want to call you this manner.

This title implies a minimum of respect indeed.

I do it nevertheless because it is you who you express in the name of the Iranians. On the photographs, I see you in front of crowd, faces, raised hands.

Undoubtedly can one guess a form of enthusiasm there, in any case of adhesion.

We, in Europe, knew this crowd. It was a bad moment for us. One tragic period of which we continue to carry shame and distresses.

One of the most cultivated people world, people which had raised with a high degree the philosophy, the music, poetry, science, people which had astonished his neighbors by his radiation had sunk in hatred, the racial madness, the ignominie.

Tens of million individuals underwent, in their flesh their culture, their dignity, this strange cruelty which wanted to be a new order. They were initially the proper nationals of this State, the Germans, then little by little the others, all the others…

One called this madness a world war.

But it was especially a war against what there was the human one in us. The books were burned, the off-set and assassinated children, the broken intelligences.

All that made the honor of the man was trampled. And then…

And then, I come to you: part of the mankind, the Jewish people, was intended for the hell. Oh, I concede it to you, a small part.

It was neither most, neither richest, nor even most influential.

They was men and women who had carried very a long time and very far their faith, their questions about the world, God, the need for living or for suffering, on happiness to like. Generally, they attended the books. They reflected much, they did not include/understand why they were not liked, why one called them “under men” of Untermensch, why one regarded them as insects… They were pursued in all Europe, were hung, shot, burned…

You know all that perfectly, but I at least evoke it in front of you for three reasons:

    – The first, it is that we (I say, it is “to us” a way of speaking) will not accept that that starts again. I am not Jewish, but the Jews are, like the Persians my brothers as a humanity.

    – The second, it is that they have the right, like you, like me to have a fatherland. Whether it is France or Israel does not change anything with the business.

    – You will not like the third reason. But so much worse: it is that they bring to the world (and probably it is that which you want “to stripe of the chart”) it is a design of the man and its destiny which enriched several centuries by civilization, and which makes honor with the Jewish people as in the State of Israel.

Mr. President, you have the right to be nationalist. You have the right to be proud history of the Persian people. You have the believing right to be and to request “lenient and miséricordieux” God as it is known as at the beginning of each sourate of Coran.

You think of having the right to veil the women, to torture the opponents, to imprison the journalists who contradict you, to condemn to dead minors, to persecute your minorities.

But you do not have the harbour due on Israel the turbid, idiotic and heinous glance which accompanies your speeches. Because it seems to to me that you hate in this State the free word, the diversity of the parties, the role of the opposition, the independence of justice, university research and undoubtedly also… courage.

I.e. all that we have the right to admire.

The men who organized the meeting of Wannsee where was issued the destruction of the Jews of Europe are all died today. Naturally, like each one among us, you will follow this destiny.

I wish only that for yourself, for the Persian people, the young children of Iran or Israel which will survive you, it does not come to anybody the desire for going to spit on your tomb.

François Léotard, on July 11, 2006.
